I'm sure I could write a huge article on all the wonderful reasons that we chose to put Khalid in cloth, but there is certainly a plethora of information out there. I wanted to post a few short and simple reasons why we chose cloth. Perhaps it will whet your appetite for more information!
1. Keeping plastic disposables out of the landfill helps me sleep easier at night. 500 years for one diaper is just too much for me to handle. Yes, we do use water to wash the cloth, but the environmental impact of the water usage is far smaller than it would be by putting that many disposables in the ground. Note: we do not use a dryer... all of our diapers are line dried
2. Cloth is cheaper! You can save thousands of dollars by using cloth, especially if you buy second-hand cloth. Check out this website! Imagine how much you can save by using your cloth on more than one little bum!
3. Did you know that disposables are full of chemicals? Most diaper rashes appear on baby bums in disposables because of the chemicals found within them. Since cloth is more natural, many cloth diapered babies never see a diaper rash.
4. Can you imagine what a disposable diaper must feel like on your bum? I sure hope that if I ever get to a point in life when I must wear diapers that someone in their right mind would put me in cloth.
5. Cloth is ADORABLE! Have you seen how cute cloth diapers are these days? Ok, let's be honest. I actually enjoy shopping for diapers more than my own clothes now. It's sad, but true.
6. Less mess. Ok, hear me out on this one. I know that cleaning cloth sounds gross, but it's really not. Breastfeeding poo can go right in the washing machine, no rinsing needed, so we just pull the diaper off, and put it in a diaper pail. Then, every other day, we dump the diaper pail in the washing machine and boom... clean diapers. I've heard some pretty nasty stories of diaper blow outs up the back of disposables. Once you get the hang of cloth, blow outs are pretty much non-existent. Khalid has never had a blow out up the back (although I've seen that he's tried by the "pattern" left in his diapers). He had a few out the legs when he was little and we were still learning how tight to put his diapers on. Now, no blow outs, hence... less mess! Beautiful.
Well, the little man himself, is rousing from his slumber so I must go. Keep a lookout for an update soon!
I am following you from the Green Mom Blog Hop. I love your post I also own a Natural Parenting Company in metro Atlanta www.mommysecretsonline.com and my biggest battle is convincing new moms that cloth is LESS gross than disposables!
